Coloring is an activity which is generally associated with children. For a long time, resorted to coloring to keep the children occupied during babysitting. The concept of grownups devoting time in coloring books was considered silly and trivial. However, that notion is slowly going for a toss. Psychiatrists as well as researchers have concluded that coloring is beneficial, especially due to its de-stressing capabilities.
They turned out great! Now we have our own Matisse like painting we can hang in our house and enjoy. Crayon Kid loved it as well. I showed him The Sheath coloring page later and we talked about our leaf prints as he colored it. I love sharing these experiences with him and making these connections. It’s so important for your child to not only experience art, but to use it as a jumping off point for other skills. Language, social skills, and fine motor skills can all be fostered in creating works of art together.
When children color, they build up their fine motor skills, which in turn will lead to building up their endurance in completing writing tasks. Children can build up the small muscles in their hand when they color in small spaces, or make small movements, like circles. This lends itself to leading up to making strokes for letter formation and writing, and ultimately being able to sustain in a writing task.
Colors are a very effective and vivid way of interacting with our brains. Often people use extensive explanations and paragraphs to describe a particular situation or a topic. It seems as if words are sometimes simply inadequate to convey a message efficiently in a way that facilitates retention. It is as if the brain finds it difficult to assimilate it. However, by drawing a picture or a sketch, it automatically “speaks a thousand words”.
Facts are stored better if they come in more than one way so coloring benefits both visual and kinesthetic learners by automatically providing a second door for information to enter. While the advantages outlined above are extremely important, the following one should not be overlooked. Coloring is easy and fun. Anatomy, although interesting, can become dull and boring if you only use one method of learning every single time and you constantly repeat it. Coloring partially eliminates the mind numbing text, essays and explanations required to describe and understand anatomical structures.
The common problem which we all face during meditation is to refrain from thinking anything. However, coloring, being an alternative and more of a hands-on approach, allows us to “do something while solely focusing on the activity. Dr. Stan Rodski, a neuropsychologist by profession, who also publishes his own line of coloring books, states that this particular art therapy enkindles a relaxing response in our mind, akin to what we feel during meditation. Coloring is also not devoid of physical health benefits. Rodski stated that significant changes in brainwaves and heart-rate was observed when someone paid undivided attention to the designs and patterns while coloring.
