Coloring is an activity which is generally associated with children. For a long time, resorted to coloring to keep the children occupied during babysitting. The concept of grownups devoting time in coloring books was considered silly and trivial. However, that notion is slowly going for a toss. Psychiatrists as well as researchers have concluded that coloring is beneficial, especially due to its de-stressing capabilities.
Theresa Citerella, a student of art therapy at the Lesley University, was quoted saying that a lot of her classmates use coloring books in class to focus on their lessons. Similarly, Theresa also states that fidgety clients attending therapy sessions tend to ask for coloring books to concentrate and participate in group discussions. To achieve these positive results, people have started using coloring apps, such as the Mandala Coloring, on their smartphones and tablets. Coloring apps help you engage in this creative activity on the go.
It is very important for your children to have proper grip and control over their writing and coloring tools. This will help them greatly to work on penmanship. Language Development, Coloring and just talking about it will give your kids an opportunity to learn new words and sentences. Children use descriptive words to talk about their feelings when they see different styles of coloring sheets. Children coloring pages aids in developing their critical thinking ability. Lastly and most importantly, coloring will also allow you and your child to have some quality time together.
Coloring also creates visual relationships. In other words, it creates motorways between the mental cities found inside your mind. A lot of study strategies encourage students to create relationships when learning new information because it is better for long-term retention compared re-reading and repetition. A coloring book automatically does this for you by presenting a structure and its associated term on a single page and instructs you to color both of them using the same color.
Stimulates Both Cerebral Hemispheres, Apart from effectively combating stress and anxiety, picking up the crayons also stimulates both the left and right cerebral hemispheres of our brain. Gloria Martinez Ayala believes that coloring manages to trigger a number of regions in both the right and left hemispheres of our brain. “The action involves both logic, by which we color forms, and creativity, when mixing and matching colors. This incorporates the areas of the cerebral cortex involved in vision and fine motor skills [coordination necessary to make small, precise movements].” says Ayala.
When children color, they build up their fine motor skills, which in turn will lead to building up their endurance in completing writing tasks. Children can build up the small muscles in their hand when they color in small spaces, or make small movements, like circles. This lends itself to leading up to making strokes for letter formation and writing, and ultimately being able to sustain in a writing task.
